The Challenge: Ten Facebook Likes In Ten Days.

Hello everyone!

We’ve come to the end of another week, a week, that, I must say, was anticlimactic compared to the weather rollercoaster we in the Northeast were subjected to last week!

The good thing is, summer is winding down and it’s time to look forward to fall here in the United States.  I can feel it in the air already!

I’ve always loved the transition from summer to fall, and last year, I took a number of photos on the streets of Jersey City NJ that documented that change, including the one below. For me, nothing beats cooler weather, football and the leaves on the trees changing from green to brilliant reds, yellows and oranges.

In My 'Hood (Autumn in Audubon Park). Taken 10-22-2010 in Jersey City, NJ

As I’ve reported before, here and on my Facebook page, September is my birthday month! And, my birthday actually falls on the 15th!    So, I was sitting here, really pleased to have gotten my 90th like and was wondering: Wouldn’t it really be really nice to get to 100 likes on my page before the 15th, which is in less than 2 weeks? I say 10 days but it’s really 10 business days. In the big scheme of things, I guess it doesn’t really matter. And yes. I sit at home and think these things up all by myself in the wee morning hours.

That’s how committed I am to this photography thing. I’m not one of these fancy photographers with like 2 gazillion fans, or anything. I’m really humbled and grateful for all the support I’ve received over the past year or so since I started photo blogging. It tells me that I am on the right path and I just have to keep plugging away.

And to the 90 folks who have liked my page, THANK  YOU!!! I really, truly appreciate all the support and encouragement and feedback I’ve received from you along the way.  It means the world to me!

With that said, I’d like to have more people along for the ride, so I offer my Top 10 reasons why you, the unconvinced, should like my page:

  1. Because it only takes 10 seconds to do. You click the link, go to my page, and click the Like button. The end. And I get a notification and then I shout you out on my page and make you feel all special and glittery and singled-out, like a celebrity! How awesome is that?
  2. Because it’s becoming a pretty interesting and diverse community of artists, photography lovers, and friends of those of us who love photography. If you haven’t been following along, there’s so much you’re missing, because there is a lot that I feature on my page that I don’t talk about on my blog.
  3. Because you like me. Or at least I thought you did. I’ll know for certain that you really like me if you liked my page.
  4. Because I like you. A lot.
  5. Because it’s a great place to talk about street photography, which is my primary interest. And, I feature a lot of images that don’t make it to the blog. You may be missing quite a bit and you don’t even know how much!
  6. Because I don’t take photography so seriously that I forget that it’s all about passion and creativity and emotional connections between the image maker and the subject and the viewer. There’s going to be very little technical talk on my page.
  7. Because my page features photography that documents my time spent in three states! Three! Count them: New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania!
  8. Because I also like to link to other interesting photography-related and cultural/social interest blogs and websites. It’s not always about me and my work, because I believe that my work is constantly being informed and influenced by the world around me.
  9. Because once I get to 100 I’ll be quiet for a little while. And….
  10. Because it will be a great birthday gift to me!

Just so you know…. I’m planning something special for the 100th person to like my page, so stay tuned. I’ll have more details to share with you next week.

In the meantime, peace and blessings, and to all my friends and supporters in the US, have a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend!

Photo,”Dog Loves That Human,” Accompanies Jersey Journal/NJ.Com Write-Up of “Images of Jersey City” Exhibit

The good news keeps coming, everyone. I am completely overwhelmed.

I just learned late last night that one of my photos (Dog Loves That Human) that was selected to be shown as part of the Project Greenville-sponsored “Images of Jersey City” group exhibit that opens today was also selected with four other photos to accompany a write-up about the exhibit on the NJ.com/Jersey Journal website!!!

The write-up by Summer Dawn Hortillosa of the Jersey Journal is here, and the link to my photo is here.  Go check it all out and tell me what you think!  I was stunned, since I’m pretty new to this game!!!

With all that said, I’d like to take a moment to send my thanks and appreciation to Elizabeth Deegan, founder of Project Greenville and chief organizer of the “Images” group exhibit and the other judges, Jersey City Free Public Library Head Librarian Cynthia Harris and photographers Gary Nigh and Andrew Bovasso.

Also, I’d like to congratulate the other four talented photographers whose stunning images accompanied the Jersey Journal piece:  Felipe Lara,  Lorenzo Pickett, Max Delgado, and Dale Luker. I am humbled to be a part of this group.

Finally, I’d like to send a big thank you to all of my friends, family and fellow photographers who have been a major source of encouragement and support over the past year.  Without you, I don’t think I would have made it this far…I would have thrown in the towel and walked away.  So thank you from the bottom of my heart.

What a fabulous way to kick off the weekend!!!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Faded Royalty, and 4 Other Images Will Be Shown In The “Images of Jersey City” Group Exhibition, Opening May 14th!!!

In lieu of my regular Photo of the Day post, I wanted to take a moment to make a special announcement…..

I am really, really, really happy to announce that 5 of my photos will be included in a group exhibition entitled “Images of Jersey City,” sponsored by Project Greenville.   They are:  Faded Royalty, Audubon Park I (see below; Audubon Park II can be seen here), The God Wall, Late Practice, and Dog Loves That Human

In My Hood (Audubon Park I). Taken August 27, 2010 in Jersey City, NJ

This exhibit is near and dear to my heart because I lived in the Greenville section of Jersey City for 3 years before moving to Philadelphia.  Subsequently, I took a lot of photos there and in other JC neighborhoods.  So I’m really excited about this exhibit because it will hopefully continue to attract a lot of positive attention for a community that could really use some.

I want to send a big shout out to Elizabeth Deegan, exhibit organizer and the mastermind behind this effort.  She is to be commended for her energy, vision, generosity, focus and tenacity.  I would have never known about this opportunity if she hadn’t popped over to my blog a few months ago to check out my photograph of the Faded Royalty mural  I took up in Jersey City Heights back in November, 2010.  She worked singlehandedly to generate a lot of buzz about this exhibit and was successful in getting a lot of attention and press

People like her are the reason why it was so hard for me to leave Jersey City, but people like her are the reason why I still have hope in humanity and in the arts.  Without people like her, emerging artists and photographers like me would have limited or no opportunities to showcase our works to new audiences, audiences that may never get a chance to see themselves and their communities in the work that we produce.  I won’t get on my pro-art and free-expression soapbox here, but those of you who know me well know how I feel about this issue.

At any rate, the exhibit will feature the works of over 20 photographers..all things Jersey City, New Jersey, which is really cool.  Jersey City has a lot of offer and I can personally say from having lived there, it definitely has its share of diverse people, places and things, and it deserves a lot more attention other than the fact that it’s across the river from NYC and convenient to the PATH trains.  I know that my counterparts did a fantastic job capturing the essence of what is Jersey City through their lenses.  Many congratulations to all of them.

So…..if you’re in the NYC/north Jersey area and want to check out some awesome photography, the exhibit opens this coming Saturday, May 14th from 3:00 – 8:00 pm with a reception.  It will be open to the viewing public on the following Saturdays:  May 21, May 28, June 4 and June 11 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. Also, it will be open on Friday, June 3rd, from 3:00 – 7:00 pm as part of JC Fridays.  If these times don’t fit your schedule, appointments can be made to view the exhibit by calling (646) 361-1858.  There will be a closing party Saturday, June 18th from 3:00 -8:00 pm.  Click here to see the nice flyer that was produced to announce the exhibition.

So here we go!!! Let’s get it in 2011!

Jersey City Heights: Neglected Mural.

Taken November 12, 2010 on Central Ave and Lincoln St, Jersey City

I took this photo as I walking back to the bus stop.   I noticed that this mural dates back to 1996; was part of the Jersey City Museum‘s public art program; and, is in need of some conservation work.

It’s a really nice mural, though.

Jersey City Heights: Goehrig’s Bakery.

Taken November 12, 2010 on Central Avenue, Jersey City

I took this photo across the street from the Faded Royalty mural I photographed earlier that morning.

If you haven’t been to Goehrig’s Bakery, you need to go.  I didn’t grab anything to eat that morning, but the smell of freshly baked goods emanating from this place was divine!!!

I’ll definitely will be back for something sweet real soon.

Photo: Out My Window (The Moon Reigns As Queen of the Night)

I took this early this morning…I call the moon queen because she was taking her sweet time settling into the horizon….almost like she was telling the sun to wait.

That is all.

Photo: Jersey City Heights – Faded Royalty.

Taken November 12, 2010 on Central Avenue, Jersey City

Here is another mural I shot while on Central Avenue.  It’s like a billboard advertisement for the shop with the same name.  Go check it out at Congress and Central Avenue.

When I crossed the street to shoot the mural of Goehrig’s Bakery (gotta work on edits), one of the guys who works there was nice enough to talk to me for a minute.

I told him I was just an amateur photographer with an interest in public art around town, and he was nice enough to tell me the name of the artist who was responsible for the Faded Royalty mural.

His name was…..get this……………………………..Tony

Yep.  Tony.

Is that straight Jersey or what?

LMAO!!!

Anyway, if anyone sees this and actually knows the name of the artist, let me know.  In the meantime, I’m calling him Tony.

Yo Tony, come ‘ere…I’m talkin’ to you, Tony (in my best Jersey accent).

Photo: Jersey City Heights: Central Avenue Awaits.

Taken November 12, 2010 on Central Avenue, Jersey City

Back in October, I learned through the local media that a couple of new murals had been completed on Central Avenue, the heart of the Jersey City Heights shopping district.  One was by Megan Gulick and the other, photographed above, was by Richard LaRovere.

So I had a really good time snapping these photos, even though I had to haul ass to get to them (wearing my 20lb backpack with my gear, etc.).  That’s okay, because I needed the exercise anyway.

So it hit me as I was editing my photos….Why do the people depicted in the mural look nothing like the people I saw up and down Central Avenue that morning?

Maybe the people I saw are those that are left behind after all the people who look like the ones in the mural make their way into NYC in the morning to go to work.

I’m just sayin.

At any rate, go here to see another image I captured of LaRovere’s mural called “Jersey City Heights Represent.”

Photos: In My ‘Hood (Seasons Change – Audubon Park, Jersey City)

I took this (and others) during a summer day in late August.

And then I went back and snapped a few photos last Friday evening.

Boy, I love how the seasons change.

I can’t remember the order in which I took this and the late practice photos.

I watched the young man with the football jersey and the young man on the bike under the street lamp and remembered the days when we used to hang out under our street lamp after dark…hoping our parents wouldn’t call us inside for the night.

Sadly, things have changed.

At any rate, I retouched both to give them that nostalgic feel.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to being 15 or 16 again.  Whoever said being grown was the ish was sadly mistaken.
