What would you name this photo? I have no idea. Taken April 26 2012 in Philadelphia PA

Here’s the backstory:

I was walking down Chelten Avenue toward home when I came across this pair of booties (?) or slippers on the steps of the First Presbyterian Church of Germantown.

No one was around to claim them.

I stood there, wondering if I should take the shot or not.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t ask this ownerless pair of shoes for permission to shoot a portrait.

So I surreptitiously pulled out my camera and shot the above image, looking around to see if anyone was watching.  Because honestly, it seems a little odd for someone to be taking a photo of a pair of slippers sitting on the steps of a church.  *side eye*

Usually, in post, after I’m finished editing, I come up with catchy titles for my images.  But in this case, I couldn’t think of a damn thing.  So this is where you come in.

What would you name this photo?  Leave a comment either here or on my Facebook page.  We’ll put the best ones to a vote…and the one who gets the most likes will win a special prize.  I haven’t figured out what that prize will be yet…but it will probably be an 8X10 print of your choice from my collection.

Thanks, and let the games begin.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Meet Crystal.

Her beautiful mane of hair caught my eye as I was checking out a book from the Northwest Regional Library.

I knew that I would regret not asking her to take her photo.  So I did.   She seemed to be used to people asking her…

The first thing she asked me when we were walking outside the library was what kind of camera I had.

Taken April 24, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA.

I guess that my response was sufficient.

I snapped a few frames, she told me her name (again), and she and her very adorably handsome son went on their way.

Hair, glorious hair…

So…..I asked everyone on my Facebook page if they had any beautiful hair stories to share.  Please feel free to jump in and speak your piece in the comments!

Happy New Year! From Philly, With Love…

I had a blast, and, it seems that a lot of other people did too!! More to come.  Like my Facebook page so you can keep up with my Philly chronicles!

Photo of the Day: This Is Real (There’s No Turning Back).

Taken October 7, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA.

I captured this and several other images last week at City Hall, where the Occupy Philadelphia protests were getting underway.

I thought this image pretty much captured the spirit and sentiment of how people are feeling and why people are protesting….

If you want to view the entire photo set, it’s posted on my Facebook page.

My goal is to try to get down to Center City to shoot at least once a week.  I’ll keep you posted.

Peace and blessings.

Photos of the Day: The Fog of Battle.

I shot these images this past Saturday at the Revolutionary Germantown Festival.  View the rest of the photo set here.  The accompanying back story about the Festival and the re-enactment of the Battle of Germantown of October 4, 1777 can be found here.

I’ll be posting outtakes from the day to my Facebook page and on other social media sites in the next few days, so be on the lookout.

We Did It!

There’s nothing more fulfilling than being able to finish what you start.  As a former project manager, nothing is more frustrating than to set a goal and to not complete it in the prescribed timeframe.  Conversely, it’s totally exhilarating to reach a goal, ahead of schedule and to take a moment to celebrate.

So, here we go!  Congratulations to Quincy Sean Stallworth for being the 100th person to like my Facebook Page. Quincy is the winner of the Ten Facebook Likes in Ten Days Challenge, and will receive an 8 X 10 print of his choice from my collection.  I don’t think he knows that he won…or that he even walked into this situation, but it’s good all the same.

So – How exciting is that? I know I’m excited, because I’ll be honest: I didn’t think that I would make my goal of getting to 100 likes on my page by my birthday on Thursday. But I did, and although I’m really thrilled that I achieved this milestone in my photography journey, I’m ready to push even harder to continue to create images that everyone can relate to.

I see the future, and it looks pretty bright from where I’m standing. And I’m glad to know that I have all of you along for the ride to keep me company and to keep me honest.

Thanks to everyone on Facebook who shouted me out to their friends, linked to or reposted my images, used my images as their profile pictures, etc. Thanks to all of my blog subscribers. Thanks to all of you who have connected with me on Twitter, Flickr, 500px and PictureSocial.  Thanks to my friends on Tumblr and I promise to get over there more often.

Thank you to all of you whom I have met offline and allowed me to capture your greatness and uniqueness. Thank you to my friends and family who believed in me and had nothing but encouraging words to say to me when I had trouble believing in myself, when I had nagging self-doubt that kept me up at all hours of the night.

It really means a lot to me…all of it. You have no idea. I am truly grateful.
Onward and Upward!

Peace and blessings.

It’s Full Moon Monday!!! Two More Likes to Go….

Hello everybody and happy full moon Monday!

Last week was quite a busy one for me photography-wise, and for that I’m extremely grateful! It’s nice when others acknowledge my work and give me more photography projects to complete that showcase what’s going on here in Philadelphia. So let me say my thank yous before I get down to the nuts and bolts of today’s post.

First off, let me extend my thanks to De Lantz for shouting me out Thursday at his inaugural Coffee After Dark open mic session at Wired Beans Cafe in Mt. Airy. I really appreciated that. Thanks to all of the poets and artists who performed that night, and thanks to all of those who chose to connect with me on Facebook. Just so you know, the photo set is ready and will be posted up on my Facebook page later today.

I just want to say….the Philly underground spoken word community is really dynamic and I have some ideas that I want to explore via the photographic medium along these lines. More to come in the coming months!

Also, I want to also give a big shout out to Rob Wheeler, owner of Wired Beans Cafe, and the Wired Wednesdays crew of musicians, singers, spoken word artists and others for being so supportive of my photography efforts. Much love to each and every one of you all. You all are so talented, and I am so honored to be able to view all of it through my lens every week.

Finally, thanks to Zach Subar, editor of the Mt. Airy Patch, for giving me my first photo essay assignment that I completed over this past weekend. Check it out here. Many thanks to the Philadelphia Fire Department and Captain Tygh who granted me access to the crew on duty that I photographed. I had a lot of fun.  I also just found out that one of the images of the photo set was named Photo of the Week!  Cool!

Okay. I’m happy to report that I’m very close to meeting my goal of 100 Facebook likes before my birthday this coming Thursday, September 15th. Right now, I’m at 98.  98 is a good number…don’t get me wrong.  100 would be really nice, though.

Basically, it comes down to this: The 100th person to like my page will be eligible to receive a free 8X10 print of his or her choice from my body of work, which includes images posted here on my photo blog, my Flickr photo stream , my 500px site, Facebook and PictureSocial.

If this works out okay without a Jerry Springer-style brawl breaking out between #99 and #100 (I kid, I kid), I plan on sponsoring more giveaways in the near future to keep things interesting.  If you have ideas or suggestions regarding fun giveaways, feel free to contact me at any time.  I welcome all feedback.

It’s funny…no one wants to be #99. LOL!!  But someone is going to have to be #99….Sorry!

At any rate, see you over at my Facebook page, and good luck!

Thank you all.  Peace and blessings.

Hey everyone, I hope all of my friends here in the States had a wonderful Labor Day weekend and are settling into what we now consider the start of the fall season.

Things are really picking up in my neck of the woods, I’m pleased to share, and I’m also pleased to report that since I launched my Ten Facebook Likes in Ten Days challenge, I’ve got 9 more likes to go!  Thank you Patricia for your support!

Here’s the deal.  If you’re following my blog and not my travails on Facebook, you’re missing out on quite a bit of my photography journey!

So, help me make my birthday on the 15th an awesome one.  Check out my Page and click that Like button!

Peace and blessings.

The Votes Are In….And I’ve Decided To Choose (Drumroll, Please)….

… “Lovers In Their Own World… ” as my street photo submission!

Lovers In Their Own World. Taken June 29, 2010 in NYC.

I decided to convert it back to color from black and white.  I found that there are a number of elements that become apparent when the image is in color that are lost when the image is in black and white.  In my opinion, these elements function as the glue that helps hold the composition together.

It was a tough choice to make, but I think it was the best one given the aims of the contest.  I am deeply appreciative to those of you who commented here, on my Facebook Page, over at LinkedIn, tweeted me, and otherwise took the time out of your day to share your thoughts and impressions on all four photos I put up for consideration.  It’s a real testament to the power and immediacy of social media.

Again, thank you.

Last Chance to Express Yourself!! Don’t Be Left Out!

It’s a new month! Let’s all breathe a sigh of relief as we say goodbye August, goodbye earthquakes and hurricanes! I’m looking forward to great things happening this fall.

And to kick off my birthday month, I want to make a final appeal to you for your help.  Earlier this week  I wrote a blog post asking for your help in selecting one of four photos to submit to a street photography contest this coming Friday, September 2nd.   Well, it’s Thursday, September 1st, and I haven’t heard from you…perhaps you had a good reason…maybe you didn’t read the original post, or the follow-up post I wrote yesterday …I understand.  We all get busy.

But for heaven’s sake…this is social media!  What’s social about ignoring a chance to comment, tweet, or talk smack on someone’s blog?   Yeah, I thought so!

Anyway, to those of you who took the time to comment on the blog, on my Facebook Page, or via Twitter, thank you so much!  Special shout-out goes to my friend Noel…you are so awesome!  If you’re on Twitter, you need to follow him.

And to those of you who are procrastinating or just being obstinate, well…. let’s just say, time is running out.  I really want to hear from you.  I really, really, really do.  I know you’re out there, lurking, and it would really be nice to hear your thoughts.   It will only take you about 5 minutes to look at each photo and tell/tweet me which one you like the best.   That’s all.  Nothing more.

Here are the photos:

Man, She's Not Impressed. Taken June 29, 2010 in NYC.

Look at this woman’s expression….classic NYC “nothing phases me.” Not even a man doing a handstand without his hat falling off!

If you don’t like “Man, She’s Not Impressed,” register your comment.  Tell me what you don’t like about it…and while you’re at it, choose from one of the other three images below.

Chicken Head. Taken June 19, 2010 in NYC

Yes, I called the above image “Chicken Head.” I took this at the 2010 Mermaid Parade in Coney Island.  She was wearing a KFC bucket on her head  and chatting away with her friend, totally oblivious to everything going on around her.  Appropriate?  Yes.  I think so.

Respect His Manhood. Taken September 27, 2010 in Jersey City, NJ

One of my favorites is the above image, “Respect His Manhood” which I shot on the streets of Jersey City, NJ last year.  A man who has the guts to use a frog umbrella in the rain without blinking an eye gets my respect.

Lovers In Their Own World. Taken June 29, 2010 in NYC.

Finally, I was going to go with “Lovers In Their Own World” (originally titled “Lovers Embrace Among the Chaos”) because I think it embodies what street photography is all about.  In the midst of all of the chaos in the heart of midtown Manhattan, in a city notorious for its anti-commitment, love em’ and leave ‘em sentiment, I captured this couple, holding one another in a tight embrace, oblivious to the madness.  They didn’t wait, they found each other, held on to one another, bags and all.  Believe me, that’s a feat unto itself (those of you New Yorkers can relate to what I’m saying).

Anyway, I don’t want to unduly influence you.  I want to know what you think. Hit me up on Twitter, Facebook or here in the comments.  I promise.  I won’t ask after today.

Thank you and peace.
